8 DIY TIPS FOR HOSTING A 4TH OF JULY PARTY

Given our “special relationship” with the United States, it seems to me that the 4th of July is a great excuse for a party, whether or not you’re American. Here are a few ideas for putting on a visually spectacular Independence Day party.

Flowers always add such a pretty and delicate touch and can really lift the theme. Use big blue hydrangeas, red poppies, and red roses to make a beautiful arrangement which is perfectly in all American colours.

SHOWSTOPPER CAKE

If you want nothing but a strong salute to the United States, a showstopper cake will do just that. This American flag cake is nothing but a head turner and will impress every one of your guests. Get the recipe here.

PATRIOTIC TABLE SETTING

Do as the Americans do and go all out! Adopt their (often) over the top approach to table styling and place American flags, Red plates, American flag serviettes and blue candles. Don’t be afraid to go OTT and have fun with it.

FRUIT SPARKLERS

This could not be easier, or more of a crowd pleaser! Watermelon cut into stars for the top. You can use blueberries or blackberries for the blue, and add marshmallows for the white. Stick them all generously onto skewers and hand out to guests.

VINTAGE AMERICA

This idea is quaint and simple. All you need are a few vintage suitcases or trunks (overturned wooden crates would also do the job!) and some classic glass Coca-Cola bottles. The rest can be improvised. You use the trunks to display an assortment of red, white and blue food platters. Scroll down for ideas!

GET CRAFTY THIS JULY

Save all of your empty baked bean or soup tins for occasions like this. Paint the tins red, white and blue and use a sharp object, like a scriber, to carve out a pattern. Because the colour-way could be representative of France or Britain, it might be wise to spell out USA, as shown in the image.

Rice pots are also a very clever and effective addition to your table. Simply colour your rice with food colouring and layer into clear glass jars- so easy!

PATRIOTIC PRETZELS

This could not be easier, all you need are white chocolate, red and blue food colouring and pretzels. Melt the white chocolate and split into 1 large cup (to dunk the pretzel in) and then into 2 zip lock plastic bags. Add a tiny drop of colouring to each bag and mix to make red and a blue bag. Snip a tiny corner off of each bag and drizzle over the white chocolate dipped pretzels on the bottom and dip the tops in the red and blue colouring.

RAG TRADE

This would look amazing above your front door or the doorway to where you’re holding the party. To make this you would need to rip fabric into strips and tie them with a double knot over a piece of string.
